Print quality

The HP Colour LaserJet Pro M283FDW typically outshines the competition in terms of print and copy quality, with text and black and white graphics both coming out crisp and dark. Colour printing performs well with sharp graphics and vivid colours on plain paper.  Quality of print will always better on higher grade or thicker papers. Photo printing quality although clear is really where the limitations of laser printing technology show up against inkjet photo printing especially with coated papers. Coated paper must only be used in inkjet printers. Both scan and copy quality is quite high for both text and image.

By contrast, the text output quality of the Brother MFC-L3745CDW is good and suitable for most business uses.

Speed

In terms of print speeds, the HP M283FDW comes out on top, with a rating of 27 pages per minute for both monochrome and colour prints needing minimal processing.  The Brother MFC L3745CDW isn’t far behind with a rating of 24 pages per minute for both colour and monochrome, so unless you’re printing a lot of pages at the 11th hour, the difference is negligible.

Features

Both printers will let you print, copy, scan and fax.  You can print, scan and fax from a computer or use both the machines as standalone copy and fax machines via their touch sensitive keypad.  You can print JPEG and PDF files from a front facing USB ports and they can be connected to a PC via Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi and WiFi Direct.  Paper capacity of both printers is approximately 250 sheets with a one-page manual feed slot.  Both printers have single sided scanning from the flatbed scanner or automatic document feeder.

Double sided scanning the Brother MFC-L3770CDW offers that feature or the HP Colour Laserjet Pro M479FDW.

Both machines allow scan, fax and print from your computer, and they can print from and scan to a USB memory key as well as to mobile devices through an access point on your network.  Both can be connected to a PC via Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or USB cable.

Price

The price difference between the MFC L3745CDW and the M283FDW is relative, so it really comes down to the needs of your home or office space and the kinds of features you require.  In terms of operational costs, both printers offer value for money with high yield cartridges that enables low cost text printing.  Compatible cartridges are more likely to be targetted in the HP so take care with these.
