Replace Brother Toner Cartridges and Drum Units

One of the most common questions we get from our customers is how to change over Brother toner cartridges, so this week, we thought we’d give a complete run down of the process and explain exactly how Brother models differ from other manufacturer models.

How is it different?

Most brands sell toner cartridges and drum units as a single product, but with the Brother the two are sold separately. Whilst this might seem like an attempt to get more money out of customers, it’s actually a much more sustainable and cost effective way of replenishing each consumable, as when a toner cartridge runs out of toner, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the drum needs to be replaced as well.

What is a drum?

Whilst most consumers know that a toner cartridge is where the powder (toner) that the laser printer uses to print with is stored, fewer people know about the function of the drum, which is to transfer the toner to the paper. Without going into too much detail, a laser printer basically puts the toner on a roller inside the drum, and then prints out the images or words on paper by using heat and pressure. Whilst the drum does deteriorate over time, it lasts much longer than the average toner cartridge and in fact only needs to be replaced approximately every four toners.

How to change the toner cartridge

When the toner cartridge comes to the end of it’s life, the printer will display a ‘replace toner’ message or you will notice a substantial deterioration in the quality of the prints.

  1. To do this, you need to have the printer turned on, open the front cover, and remove both the toner cartridge and the drum assembly from the printer.
  2. The toner cartridge is inside the drum unit and to access it, you’ll need to press down on the green lock lever and then remove the toner cartridge inside.
  3. After this is done, unpack the new toner you have purchased and remove its protective cover, then press it firmly into the drum unit until it locks into place.
  4. Next, you need to clean the corona wire inside the drum by sliding the green tab in a gentle motion from left to right a few times.
  5. Finally, place the drum unit assembly back into the printer and close the front cover.
  6. When the printer’s display returns to ‘ready mode’, you can print or turn the machine off.

How to change the drum unit

When the drum needs to be changed, a ‘replace drum’ message will be displayed. To remove the drum assembly unit, the printer needs to be turned on and you’ll need to open repeat the same first two steps as described above then.

  1. Unpack the new drum and place the toner cartridge firmly into the new unit until it makes a locking sound. If done correctly, the lock lever on the drum will automatically lift up.
  2. Replace the drum assembly unit into the printer and close the cover.
  3. Next, you’ll have to reset the drum counter on the display. This is achieved by pressing menu, scrolling up or down to machine info and then pressing the OK button, scrolling to the reset drum option, and then holding down the OK button for three seconds. Finally, press the up arrow to reset the drum unit counter. To exit this screen, simply press the stop/exit button.
